Walking tour: the back alleys of the Kraton (Sultan's Palace) with a local guide ($5 tip).

Detour: Day trip to Jomblang Cave ($35 including transport) โ€” rappel into a vertical cave with heavenly light beams.

Mount Bromo2โ€“3 days

Stay: Cemara Indah Hotel or guesthouses in Cemoro Lawang ($10โ€“20/night).

Do: Sunrise jeep tour to Penanjakan viewpoint (leave 3:30am โ€” otherworldly), then walk across the Sea of Sand to the crater rim. You can walk without a jeep if you're fit โ€” 5 km across volcanic sand. Include the savanna and Whispering Sands.

Move on: Shared minivan to Ijen (via Probolinggo, 5โ€“6 hrs).

Ijen Crater2 days

Stay: Homestays in Sempol or Licin ($8โ€“12/night).

Do: Midnight hike to see the blue fire โ€” burning sulphur with electric-blue flames (one of only two places on Earth). 3 km steep hike, gas mask provided. Then watch sunrise over the turquoise crater lake. Walking tour: continue down into the sulphur mine to meet the miners (bring snacks to share โ€” they'll appreciate it).

Move on: Ferry from Banyuwangi to Gilimanuk, Bali (1 hr, $1). Then bus to Ubud (4 hrs).

Ubud, Bali6โ€“7 days

Stay: In Da Lodge or Puri Garden Hostel โ€” $10โ€“15/night, pool, social vibe.

Do: Campuhan Ridge Walk (free, stunning at sunrise), Tegalalang rice terraces (walk the narrow paths between paddies), Monkey Forest (keep your belongings close!), Tirta Empul water temple (you can join the purification ritual). Walking tour: the Campuhan Ridge at dawn, then follow the path down through rice fields to Karsa Kafe for breakfast.

Gili Islands5โ€“6 days

Stay: Gili Trawangan for social/party scene, Gili Air for chilled vibe. Hostels from $8/night.

Do: No cars on any Gili island โ€” walk, cycle, or take a pony cart. Snorkel with sea turtles (rent gear for $3, swim from the beach). Sunset swing on Gili T's west side. Walking tour: circumnavigate Gili Air on foot (about 90 minutes at a stroll) โ€” you'll see the volcano Mount Rinjani across the water.

Optional: 3-day Rinjani trek. Very tough (3,726m volcano) but epic. Book in Senaru ($150โ€“200 all-inclusive). Only do this if you're fit and acclimatised.

Walking tour: hike from Moni village up to Kelimutu for sunrise (1.5 hrs, start at 4am).

๐ŸŒ Region Deep Dives

Select a region for specific tips, foods, and walking tours.

Java Bali Lombok & Gili Flores & Komodo

Java Essentials

Best food: Gudeg (jackfruit stew, Yogya speciality), rawon (black beef soup), sate klatak (goat satay grilled on bicycle spokes โ€” seriously). Street warungs: $1โ€“2 per meal.

Getting around: Trains on Java are excellent โ€” book via Traveloka app. Executive class has AC, reclining seats, and onboard meals. For short hops, Gojek (motorbike taxi, like Uber) costs $0.50โ€“2.

Walking tours: Yogyakarta's old city is one of the best walking cities in Southeast Asia. The alleys behind the Kraton have batik workshops where you can watch artisans work. Jakarta's Old Town walking tour starts at Fatahillah Square.

Hostels: Java has the best hostel culture in Indonesia โ€” social common areas, rooftop bars, organised tours. Expect $6โ€“12/night.

Watch out: Jakarta traffic is brutal โ€” allow 2x Google Maps time estimates. The sidewalks in Jakarta are often broken โ€” wear sturdy shoes.

Bali Beyond the Tourist Trail

Best food: Babi guling (roast suckling pig โ€” Ibu Oka in Ubud is famous), lawar (minced meat with spices and fresh blood โ€” the real version), nasi campur Bali (mixed rice with all the toppings).

Getting around: Scooter rental is $5/day. You need an international driving permit โ€” police checkpoints target tourists. Gojek works everywhere.

Avoid: Kuta (unless you want drunk Australians and chain restaurants). Canggu is the current backpacker hub โ€” fun, but busy. Seminyak for nicer cafes.

Walking tours: The ridge walks around Ubud are unbeatable. For something different: the Jatiluwih rice terraces (UNESCO, far less crowded than Tegalalang, with 5 km of walking paths).

Hidden gem: Sidemen Valley โ€” what Ubud was 20 years ago. Rice terraces, Mount Agung views, zero crowds.

Lombok & the Gilis

Best food: Ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken โ€” Lombok's signature dish), plecing kangkung (water spinach with sambal). Sambal in Lombok is seriously hot โ€” proceed with caution.

Getting around: Scooter is king in south Lombok ($4/day). The roads are good and traffic is light. No scooters on Gili Islands โ€” bicycle ($3/day) or your feet.

Walking tours: The south Lombok coastal trail from Kuta to Gerupuk takes about 3 hours โ€” climb the hill between bays for panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.

Gili tips: Gili T = party. Gili Air = balance. Gili Meno = honeymooners and not much else. The snorkelling between Gili T and Gili Meno is the best spot for turtles. No motorised vehicles โ€” the silence at night is magical.

Flores & Komodo

Best food: Ikan bakar (grilled fish โ€” incredibly fresh on the coast), se'i (smoked pork โ€” Flores is mostly Christian, so pork is common). Bring snacks for the long bus rides.

Getting around: The Trans-Flores Highway runs the length of the island. Shared minivans are the default โ€” cramped but cheap ($10โ€“15 for a full day). Book a day ahead at your guesthouse.

Walking tours: Kelimutu sunrise is the crown jewel โ€” tri-coloured crater lakes at dawn. The Bajawa area has walking routes between traditional villages that most tourists miss โ€” ask at your guesthouse for a local guide ($10โ€“15/day).

Komodo boat trip: Negotiate at the Labuan Bajo harbour โ€” shared trips start at $150 for 2 days. Includes meals, basic mattress on deck (sleeping under the stars), and all the snorkelling you can handle. Bring your own mask if you can โ€” the rental gear is tired.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Apps to download before you go: Traveloka (trains, flights, hotels), Gojek + Grab (transport, food delivery), Maps.me or Google Maps (offline maps), WhatsApp (everyone in Indonesia uses it), XE Currency, Google Translate (download Bahasa Indonesia offline).

๐Ÿ›‚ Visa & Entry

Most nationalities get a 30-day visa-free entry (non-extendable) or a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for ~$35 which can be extended once for another 30 days (total 60 days). For 3 months you'll need one of:

  1. Visa on Arrival (60 days) + a visa run โ€” Fly to Singapore/Kuala Lumpur for a weekend (flights from $40), return with a fresh VoA for another 30 days.
  2. B211A Visit Visa (60 days, extendable to 180) โ€” Apply before departure through an Indonesian embassy or agent ($100โ€“200). Best option for a full 3 months without visa runs.

Check the latest at your local Indonesian embassy โ€” visa rules change frequently. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your arrival date.
